My summer as a florist in Paris

To be published on studentcom

Florist 1

After my study, I’m planning to go backpacking in Asia. Though it involves sacrifices, like not going on holidays, be careful no to spent too much, I’m sure it’s worth it. So two summers ago, I decided to stay in Paris and look for a summer job. I was not 18 at that moment so it was a bit of an issue to find one. After many attempt I found a kind florist that was happy to hire me for the summer.

I didn’t know anything about flowers. I have flowers in my garden but my only contact with them is when I see them through my room’s window.
Not only did I found a way to fund my project, I also developed a new passion.

The shop was located in the middle of Paris, in the ‘IXeme Arrondissement ‘. It was in a very lively area of Paris, the shop was right behind the ‘Boulevard Haussman’ where are the two biggest malls of Paris ‘Les Galleries Lafayette’ et ‘LePrintemps’. Though it was aFlorist 2 small shop, it was always busy because of its location. All the employees of the shops around and the shopping centre around came to buy flowers.

At the beginning I was not doing bouquets, I was doing handling and cleaning. But little by little I was given more responsibilities. I have learnt a lot from this job.

Firstly I have learnt about what it involved to work and have duties: e.g. be on time every morning ( I had to be at 8:30 at the shop), be focused ( careless mistake could be costly, for example putting some weed killer instead of fertiliser. It may seem funny but all the bottles look the same).

I have also learnt a lot about flowers obviously, to inform customers in need. I don’t claim knowing all the name of all the flowers but I know quite a few. And it helps me to stand out sometimes during interviews, it highlight the fact that I’m versatile.

I also have met very interesting people. I remember the first time I saw this man entering in the shop; he had a particular style, quite fancy. He was very passionate about flowers and we had quite a long talk about it. Actually he was a fashion designer, as the Fashion week approached he was looking for flowers to use during his runaway. We talked about different topics, he noticed my interest in journalism and told me he had friends in the press industry and offered me to forward my details to them. I’m still in touch with him and I promised him to have a drink together the next time I head to Paris. I also remember that other man that is selling diamond in a very famous brand.

The florist I was working for had partnerships with different brands: jewellery, clothes, cars, photographers etc.. . Each week my colleague and I delivered flowers to these brands. I was always nice and trying to talk to customers in charge of the flowers. Nonetheless one brand particularly appealed me: I can’t name it, it was a luxury diamond dealer. While delivering the flowers I was dreaming for a while imagining which ring my future husband was going to offer me for my proposal. And I think the diamond seller noticed it,; once he told me to come back after I was done with my work. I had no idea of what he wanted from me but I went anyway. He made try a ‘Diamond Rivière’ worth of £10 000. Can you imagine, I had one year of my tuition fees or my backpacking trip in Asia around my neck.

Above all, I felt in love (again) with the city of Paris, the city of love. Thou I have left it I’m still full of admiration and I would never be bored of it. I was often going to Paris during the year, but Paris in summer is another city than Paris during the rest of the year. All the agitation and the stress of the year are evacuated from the city; to leave their place to the calm and to give all its charm to the pretty capital.

Learning a new job in a different city was such an unforgettable experience. I got the chance to meet amazing people, to discover new places, new skills. If you are looking for a job or a placement and you can’t find something related to your field of study, take anything that comes. Don’t refuse a job on the pretext it won’t be useful. Each work experience will be beneficial as it will bring you something new and you will learn from it!

Letter to Self

Letters to self

A key part of the course is the ability to write creatively and to reflect upon the learning. So I wrote a letter to myself in one year’s time that outlines what I want to have done, produced, thought about, read, seen or heard and how I want all those experiences to help me in my personal and professional development .

Letter to self

Dear Nour,

This year you took the plunge and plucked up the courage to leave your native country in order to study in England. A different country, a new culture and another language: you took the challenge.

You quitted your calm and peaceful life for an exciting and hectic one. You took your independence; your parents will no longer nurture you: you would have learnt to manage on your own. And it is here life is joining the course you chose you must not lean on others you have to find your own way; there will not always be people around you all the time. Some of them will help you sometimes but most of the time you will have to be clever and get by. I hope in one-year time you would have understood this, and that you would be less gullible. But I’m not very worried about it. I know somehow you are a pillar of strength.

You chose to add a step to this challenge by studying Journalism and Media, indeed get used to a new system in another European country will not be easy everyday. So you will have to be perfectly fluent and express yourself like your fellow classmates.

By the end of the year I hope you would have developed a vast array of skills that are this course demands.

You must know it, but what is making a journalist’s strength it’s his versatility: he should be able to react to any subject: sports, politics, entertainment, news, culture…Nowadays in any trade versatility is put on a pedestal.

You also chose to study a brand new language. As you know itbeing multilingual can stand you out when you will be looking for a job. Learning Arabic could just be an advantage moreover seeing that you want to become a reporter, speaking the language is a big part in understanding a culture and obviously it makes the communication easier.

Another point that is important in our society this days it’s sports. It represents an essential financial part on its own. I know that sport is not your all-consuming passion but it is important and considered by most of citizens nowadays. If you want to communicate with the world sport can be one of the master key so you made some efforts to try following the sport news, reading sports magazine and eventually by the end of the year you were able to explain clearly the rules of the off-side.

Obviously, by the end of the year you would have produced some piece of work that would have shown your commitment and all the progress you did throughout the academic year.

Another point that is also relevant in your study was confidence .I know talking in front of a large audience is not easy, how disturbing and awkward it can be. Nevertheless, I would like you to increase your self-confidence and trust yourself. You know what you are capable of, it is a part of the challenge you’re accepted: you must go the whole hog.

You already had an insight of what the job of what the job of a journalist consists in. But sometimes it can be full of illusions. Do not delude yourself .It will be tough. You will be on the field, and you will see what is going on from the inside with professional journalists. Sometimes you’ll have to fight to find a place but it’s a part of the game. However I know you are willing to do your best to achieve you goal.

You made a very good choice by studying Journalism and Media, you have learnt a lot about the world, about people. It broadened your horizons. You have discovered so much; you rub shoulders with a new culture, a different ways of living. On the human side it was such a beneficial experience: meeting a very wide range of person that all come from different background. But also on the intellectual side, you’ve learnt how the attractive world of media is working and what you need to do to find your path.

To finish, I would say that throughout this year you kept in mind the most important which is the matter of journalism: the main purpose of journalism is conveying knowledge.  It is getting closer to people and help them to understand the world they are living in.
